I consider myself an amateur painter, because I have a day job, although I have sold a few. I have painted watercolor off and on for more years than I care to remember. All of the work I do is for myself. It allows me to depressurize and escape for a while. It keeps me sane.
When I look at the work that I have done all I see are the missteps I have made during the process. In a way this is good because I am constantly learning and pushing myself to improve but sometimes it can be frustrating to the point I put my paints and brushes away for a stretch of time.
Recently I have switched to oils because I have decided that I cannot communicate what I what in only one media. In my opinion, watercolor is very unforgiving when it comes to lights while oils are much more robust giving you the ability to tweek the painting at every stage and if necessary scrape or paint over. Try that with a watercolor!
The reason I am joining this site it to be able to hire models to allow me to capture a poses that will visually communicate a thought or a feeling that I see. The way that I work is to take photographs of the model and use those to paint from. Using models with some experience, I am hoping, would allow me to contact the model to come back and add more depth and feeling to the work that you can't get from photographs alone.
